We commend to thine everlasting pity, through the ministrations of those who practice the gentle arts of healing, all sick persons, and those wounded in battle. Grant them patience under grievous ills, and respite from suffering. Be with them through the long watches of sleepless nights and days of pain; by the mercies of nature and the skills of man may they be restored to health and strength.

Our Father, we thank Thee for the assurance that this is Thy world. We want to live positive lives, working toward the fulfillment of the vision of peace which great prophets of all ages have seen. Keep us from the frustration of limited faith in the ultimate victory of love over hate, of peace over war, of right over might.

Help us to keep ourselves active in the service of our highest motives in small demands of our daily work as well as in large ones, and thus help us, we pray, to carry our share of responsibility for making this a better world. Amen.

FOR GUIDANCE IN WAR-TIME

Our Father, who art in heaven, we lift our hearts to Thee, believing that Thou who hast been the help of Thy children in ages past wilt answer the cry of Thy children today.

We pray, O God, for strength and courage that we may not falter in these days which try the souls of men.

We pray that we may have vision to see what is the right way in which to walk.

We pray that in our effort to train for wise leadership we may not forget how to be humble and in our struggle to overcome evil we may not forget how to be merciful.

We pray that in the midst of deadly conflict we may have our eyes opened to the way of a just and durable peace.

We pray, O God, that we may so hunger and thirst after righteousness that we may help to realize Thy Kingdom amoung the children of men.

Most gracious Father, bless with your special care all penitentiaries and homes of refuge. Look with pity on those who are housed there. Guide and protect those who have returned to the world. Grant all of them true contrition for past sins, and strengthen them in their good resolutions. Lead them along from grace to grace so that by the help of the Holy Spirit they may persevere in the ways of obedience and humility, and in the struggle against evil thoughts and desires. Grant the Holy Spirit to those engaged in teaching and training them, that they might have a right judgment with respect to those entrusted to them. May they labor for love of your with deep humility and singleness of purpose, purity of heart and life, and true zeal for your glory and the salvation of souls. Give them faith and love to sustain them in disappointment, love and patience toward those under them, and in your own good time crown their work with an eternal recompense. Amen.

MOST mighty and gracious good God, thy mercy is over all thy works, but in special manner hath been extended toward us, whom thou hast so powerfully and wonderfully defended. Thou hast shewed us terrible things, and wonders in the deep, that we might see how powerful and gracious a God thou art; how able and ready to help them that trust in thee. Thou hast shewed us how both winds and seas obey thy command; that we may learn, even from them, hereafter to obey thy voice, and to do thy will. We therefore bless and glorify thy Name, for this thy mercy in saving us, when we were ready to perish. And, we beseech thee, make us as truly sensible now of thy mercy, as we were then of the danger: And give us hearts always ready to express our thankfulness, not only by words, but also by our lives, in being more obedient to thy holy commandments. F the Lord had not been on our side, now may we say: if the Lord himself had not been on our side, when men rose up against us;
    They had swallowed us up quick: when they were so wrathfully displeased at us.

    But praised be the Lord: who hath not given us over as a prey unto them.

ALMIGHTY God, the Sovereign Commander of all the world, in whose hand is power and might which none is able to withstand: We bless and magnify thy great and glorious Name for this happy Victory, the whole glory whereof we do ascribe to thee, who art the only giver of Victory. And, we beseech thee, give us grace to improve this great mercy to thy glory, the advancement of thy Gospel, the honour of our Sovereign, and, as much as in us lieth, to the good of all mankind. on its number: upon boarding a new ship, each seaman was assigned a number for all of his belongings. Sailors then hung their hammocks on the appropriate numbered hook each day.
